MJA Guideline Digest: Australian clinical guidelines for the management of acute coronary syndromes (2016)

Description

This module provides a digest of the Australian clinical guidelines for the management of acute coronary syndrome 2016 by the National Heart Foundation of Australia and Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand.

These clinical guidelines have been developed to assist in managing patients presenting with chest pain suspected to be caused by an acute coronary syndrome (ACS) and those with confirmed ACS.

Topics

  • ACS Guideline Digest module overview
  • ACS Guideline background
  • Assessment of possible cardiac causes of chest pain
  • Diagnostic issues, risk stratification and acute management of ACS
  • Acute reperfusion and invasive management strategies for ACS
  • Pharmacology for ACS
  • Discharge management and secondary prevention

Learning Outcomes

  1. Diagnose and understand risk stratification of ACS
  2. Recognise acute reperfusion therapy and immediate post-fibrinolysis care for patients with ST segment elevation myocardial infarction
  3. Utilise risk stratification, informing the use of routine versus selective invasive management for patients with non-ST segment elevation ACS
  4. Demonstrate sufficient knowledge to administer antithrombotic therapies in the acute setting and considerations affecting their long term use
  5. Implement an individualised secondary prevention plan that includes both pharmacotherapies and cardiac rehabilitation
