Introduction to repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) in psychiatry and other medical specialties

Description

Treatment of chronic depression and a range of other psychiatric conditions has been very challenging with the current treatment methods. The role of neurostimulation in psychiatry has been widely acknowledged for decades (i.e. Electroconvulsive Therapy), but only recently we have had other forms of less intrusive neurostimulation protocols, which include repetitive TMS (transcranial magnetic stimulation), among the others.

Since 1 November 2021, rTMS treatment for treatment-resistant depression is rebated by Medicare (with conditions), which will lead to broader utilisation of this form of rTMS for the benefit of our patients.

rTMS is a very promising mode of treatment for a range of psychiatric conditions, such as OCD, PTSD and anxiety, as well as broader applications for pain management, rehabilitation and tinnitus.

This module will focus on rTMS for treatment-resistant depression and will introduce the other indications for rTMS.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Learn about rTMS and its use in clinical setting
  2. Define indications for rTMS and follow up on treatment protocols
  3. Manage relapses of treatment-resistant depression and use of maintenance rTMS
