Diagnosis and Management of Irritable Bowel Syndrome: A guide for the generalist

Description

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and other functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs) are highly prevalent conditions. IBS causes disturbed gut function and intrusive symptoms that impair quality of life without there being overt structural or biochemical abnormalities. Due to its prevalence and symptom burden, IBS results in a large societal cost via both direct and indirect expenditure.

Whilst this module specifically focuses on IBS, the principles apply more generally to all FGIDs including a current best practice approach to making and delivering a safe and effective diagnosis of IBS, and outline of newer, effective treatment strategies that can be initiated without specialist gastroenterology input.

Learning Outcomes

Investigate and promptly refer patients to specialists for timely diagnostic and treatment plans, if required
Know of effective dietary and psychological therapies that may be accessed without specialist referral
